Best practices

Look out for certifications
Certificates for sustainable hotels and hostels can be a good indicator that the venue keeps certain environmental standards, for example the Green Key label, the EU Ecolabel or Green Globe.
Check the accessibility
To make your activity inclusive, check if the venue is also accessible for people with reduced mobility and if it can cater for their needs.
Casual learning
Create a space for casual learning about everyday sustainability issues – short and understandable. Topic rooms of Villa Fohrde (Germany) address green mobility or the impact of our clothes with books, maps, card games.
Green venue check
How to assess environmental standards? Our Green Venue Checklist provides a guideline on sustainability aspects like: water, cleaning products, waste management, energy.
Collaborate with an ecovillage
Ecovillages can be a great learning space where participants can experience a truly sustainable lifestyle. Check the Global Ecovillage Network for ecovillages in your country.
Talk with your host
Get into a conversation with your host and maybe you can improve eco-practice on the go!
Do an “eco-scan”
Let participants wander through the venue with “green glasses”. How can you make a mindful and responsible use of the space and resources, like water, light or heating?
“We see, and try to show, that catering, food and lodging as well as cleaning, taking showers and going to the bathroom are not things separate from our courses. We like to integrate our thinking and acting actively with our surroundings.”
Lia Hamminga, fundraising advisor and Natalia Dąbrowska (EKOsmos)
Venue self assessment
Need food for thought, material for discussion or concrete steps for action?
